Last updated on 2023-02-13 at 12:21:23

Required Documents

  • Printouts about your social security status

  • Passport

  • NIE

  • Application form - EX-18

  • Proof of employment status

    e.g. autónomo documents

  • Empadronamiento

You need your empadronamiento document to confirm you are a resident.

  • [For Autónomos] Modelo 130

Modelo 130 is distributed for each quarter of the tax year, and is needed to prove you pay tax in Spain.

The green NIE (often called "Residencia") is known as the "Certificado de registro de ciudadano de la Unión". I didn't memorize it either. It's the piece of flimsy green card EU citizens need before you're fully registered as a resident of Spain. Non-EU citizens can initially depend on their visas, but will eventually need a Tarjeta de Identidad Extranjero (a biometric residence permit).

If you want to stay longer than 3 month this is not a "maybe"-process, this is an important process for all EU citizin. Not doing this steps means you're not legal living in spain.

  1. Getting the NIE number (white paper with your local TAX Number)
  2. Getting the empadronamiento (with this document you are a semi-resident, because with this document you are allowed to use the offers for locales for public transport/plain/vessels)
  3. Getting the Certificado de registro de ciudadano de la Unión (the green residencia card)

This document should help to solve step three "Getting the Certificado de registro de ciudadano de la Unión" also known as "Getting the Resdiencia". Because of this could be a bit complex in some cases, we have to define the three common cases first

Case 1 - Employeed in a spanisch company Case 2 - self-employeed Case 3 - earning money outside of spain (e.g. working for an EU company in an other country)

Making an appointment

Required for case(s): 1 / 2 / 3

To make an appointment, EU citizens should go to this link. You'll select "Certificado de registro de ciudadano de la Unión", and if you're based in Las Palmas, you want the office in Plaza de Concordia, in the old part of town near Triana. There's a modelo you must download, print, and pay, modelo 790 Código 012. As you enter, you'll be given a ticket and you'll wait your turn.

I had most of what I needed when the day came, but there was one thing I had missed – proof that I was working as autónomo. I had no such proof – I thought was sunk 😭. You can prove this in various ways, but one way the police officer suggested was by showing her a "modelo 130". This is a modelo that my acccountant had given me to pay my first quarter of income tax. They let me cross the road to a nearby print shop, and I printed out this modelo from my email.

Pro-Tip 1: Normally, it's challenging to find an available appointment within the next 2 months. Book the earliest slot you can find to play it safe. However, if you need an earlier date, visit the appointment page every day at 8 o'clock in the morning and look for cancellations. If you find one, book it and then cancel your previously scheduled slot.

Pro-Tip 2: All appointments go more smoothly if you can speak Spanish. If you're not fluent, consider asking a friend who speaks Spanish to accompany you.

Health insurance

Required for case(s): 2 (sometimes) / 3

Not in all cases you need an additional privat health insurance as a self-employee, but sometimes it could be happend. For people without any jobs in spain this is required.

Normally the insurance provides certificates, but not all of them are accepted at the appointment. If you have a permanent contract and e.g. not a one year contract, this can lead to problems.
The background to this is that the civil servant is not sure that the insurance has been taken out and paid for at least 1 year.

Example:
You have private health insurance with monthly debits (e.g. 700 euros) and the certificate says "automatically extended every year" and let's assume you took out the insurance in January and submit the application for the "Residencia" in August.
Then it looks to the official that your insurance is only valid for 6 months. In such a case, here are 3 tips:

Tip 1: A bank certificat that proves that the insurance bills must be paid properly and the official can assume that the insurance contract will be automatically extended correctly.

Tip 2: Talk to your insurance company and ask them to create a certificate that shows that you have paid all premiums so far and that the automatic extension will be carried out today.

Tip 3: There are very cheap private Spanish health insurance policies for 1 year (under 150 euros), it could help to have such insurance for the application if your own insurance does not provide a reasonable certificate or the private insurance is not enough for the civil servant.

Registro Central de Penados

Required for case(s): 2 (sometimes) / 3

In certain situations, you may need to provide a police clearance certificate known as "Registro Central de Penados".

Obtaining this is straightforward:

Step 1: Schedule an appointment here.
Step 2: Complete the Model 790 (ensure section 17 on the form is filled out).
Step 3: Pay for the form at a bank branch or ATM.
Step 4: Attend your appointment and present both the completed form and the receipt of payment. For location and contact details, visit this link.
Step 5: The certificate will be sent via email or postal service, depending on your preference.

Cost: Approximately 4 euros.
Duration: Varies based on your home country (ranging from 7 to 70 days).

"Enough Money"

Required for case(s): 2 / 3

If you're not employed by a Spanish company, you'll also need to demonstrate "sufficient funds" in a bank account. The required amount varies based on the number of people and the intended duration of your stay.

Simple solution: Deposit 10,000 Euros per person into a bank account. Then, contact the bank—regardless of its location—and request a certificate that indicates the ownership and current balance of the account.
